Indoor Plants To Grow From Seed

Let’s try to figure out how houseplant seeds should be planted for proper cultivation.

Adenium

The adenium plant is a striking representative of the family Apocynaceae. This succulent, with a sturdy trunk, can grow about 0.50 m at home.

Adenium seeds germinate very well under favorable conditions. To create the necessary conditions, you can heat the container with the sown seeds, the soil temperature should be 23-29 degrees.

adenium

Adenium flower seeds, similar to small straws, have a delicate brown color. They tend to grow rapidly, which will delight the most impatient home gardeners. Before sowing, the seeds are soaked in warm water, activating the rapid development of a small sprout.

At home, substrates based on peat or coconut pile are perfect. For the best result, the mixture should consist not only of soil for succulents or universal soil, but also of baking powder, which can be taken as perlite, coarse river sand, crushed charcoal or even foam balls.

Before sowing, a layer of drainage from expanded clay, coal, foam balls or bricks should be laid out along the bottom, and then sprinkled with moderately moistened soil. Next comes the planting of seeds. You can choose between planting in a group in one container or using small pots for each seed.

Basic requirements for growing adenium from seeds:

  • Sowing depth: from 5 to 10 mm, while the seeds should be at least 3 cm apart.
  • Soil: turf, expanded clay of coarse fraction (3: 1)
  • Air humidity: should be increased, especially during the period of active growth.
  • Illumination: bright sunlight.
  • Temperature range: during active growth – from 25 to 30 ° C, during dormancy – from 12 to 15 ° C.
  • Watering: carried out only on completely dry soil.

Plumeria

Plumeria is a tropical plant that amazes with its beauty and a pleasant aroma. In order to grow a plumeria plant from seeds at home, it is necessary not only to plant the seeds correctly, but also to provide proper care for the plant.

Plumeria is a fairly tall plant. In indoor conditions, it reaches a height of about 1.5-2 meters. This plant is more suitable for growing in conservatories and greenhouses.

Plumeria can be grown under the same conditions as adenium. I usually plant them in the same greenhouse and heat them to 25-29 degrees. Plumeria, according to my observations, rises a little later than adenium.

plumeria

For planting, you should choose fully ripe large seeds, having previously soaked them in warm water for 3-4 hours or in a solution of any growth stimulator according to the instructions. We insert the dried plumeria seeds into the holes of the cotton pad with winglets upward, after which the disc should be placed in a saucer with warm water. The roots should appear within a week. But there are other ways as well. Plumeria can be grown in the same way as adenium, in a substrate of coconut, perlite and vermiculite.

Before planting, we prepare a loose and light substrate, which must be transferred to a container with drainage holes.

For plumeria, planting seeds can be done like this: in the center of the container in the soil we make a small depression, then you need to stick the seed upward with a lionfish. We press the soil around the seed, moisten and cover with plastic or glass.

Basic requirements for growing plumeria from seeds:

  • Temperature: 23-25 ° C.
  • Air: no drafts. Ventilate once a day for 15-20 minutes.
  • Moisture: wet the substrate with a spray bottle as needed
  • Soil: humus, sand, peat, vermiculite (2: 1: 1: 1)
  • Sowing depth: 5 cm.

Date fruit

Do not rush to throw out the bones from this sweetness, because you can plant a date at home. It is quite possible to grow a domestic palm tree, but it is important to consider that it will not bear juicy fruits. The date is a huge palm tree, but it will feel good in the office, in the greenhouse, and at home.

Date seeds germinate easily. The first shoots can be seen in a week.

grow dates from seeds

Dry the thoroughly cleaned and washed seeds in the air for 24 hours. Dried date seed is best prepared before further soaking in water: making cuts or scalding in boiling water.

When washed, they should lie down for 24 hours until the next stage – soaking.

As soon as the bones are sent to a container with water, it is necessary to monitor the water level and temperature: it is best to put the container on the battery and add water daily. When the bones are well swollen, they should be transplanted into the ground.

The tiny palm should be replanted every year, increasing the size of the pot each time. Delicate roots oblige to delicately transplant the plant – by transshipment method.

Primary requirements:

  • Temperature: 24-26 ° C.
  • Air: moderately humid, no drafts.
  • Humidity: regular watering.
  • Soil: clay-sod land, humus, peat, manure, sand (2: 2: 1: 1: 1).

Passionflower

It is not difficult to grow passionflower vine from seeds at home. Growing passionflower from seeds requires mandatory soil preparation. A soil mixture of peat, humus and leafy soil must be laid out on a pallet in an even layer and calcined in the oven for 10 minutes, then allowed to cool.

The key to success in growing passionflower is the freshness of the seeds. If the seeds lie down for a year, then they may not sprout. I buy marakuya and sow the seeds as soon as they are dry. The germination rate of such seeds is about 100%.

It is best to soak the seeds for a day with the addition of stimulants – this will help us speed up the germination process.

After all the preparatory procedures, we collect the necessary soil mixture into the container and embed the seeds into it by 0.5 cm. The germinated seeds are looked after according to the standard regime for passionflower. In the future, the seedlings can be planted in separate cups.

Primary requirements:

  • Temperature: 28-35 ° C.
  • Air: moderately humid, no drafts.
  • Humidity: regular watering.
  • Soil: peat; sand; humus; leafy ground (1: 1: 1: 1).
  • Sowing depth: 0.5 cm.

Gloxinia

Growing gloxinia from seeds is a noble occupation. Indoor gloxinia is a spectacular plant with velvety flowers and juicy green leaves.

Gloxinia seeds are very small. It is not necessary to sprinkle it with soil. Temperature conditions are the main obstacle to seed germination. On the windowsill, warm air usually comes from the battery, so you need to put the seed pot closer to the glass by the window. The seeds need a temperature of 18-20 degrees.

grow gloxinia from seeds

Gloxinia seeds are small, granular. For proper germination, they do not need to be sprinkled with earth, but only carefully laid out on the ground.

To maintain the necessary moisture for sowing gloxinia, cover the container with glass or film. You can put a container with planted seeds in a transparent bag and place it under the phytolamp.

As soon as the gloxinia seedlings get a little stronger and several mature leaves appear, they can be transplanted from a homemade greenhouse into another container that is suitable in size for the root system of small sprouts.

When transplanting an already mature plant into pots, it is better to use an earthen mixture for flowering indoor plants. Add drainage to the bottom of the pot for best results.

Primary requirements:

  • Soil: leafy and peaty soil, sphagnum, sand (1: 1: 1: 1).
  • Illumination: Needs bright sunlight.

The seeds should be well ripe, but still fresh. They should be stored in a cool dry place; wet ones are not suitable for sowing. Self-prepared soil is best calcined in the oven before using it for 20 minutes.

Seeds of different types can be planted in one container while dividing the areas with plastic strips. By the way, in cramped conditions, cactus seeds feel great and grow well.

Pour drainage and soil into the dishes in an even layer, without tamping. It is necessary to delicately spread the cactus seeds on the soil and moisten: it is better to do this directly into a tray or spray from a spray bottle. After these manipulations, cover the sowing with glass and put it in a warm place.

  • Soil: humus, coarse sand, thick charcoal (3: 2: 1)
  • Illumination: artificial lighting or natural light without direct rays.

grow abutilone from seeds at home

Abutilon seeds are soaked in a wet napkin (or on it) for 12 hours, after which the germinated seeds are sown into the prepared soil to a depth of 5 mm. The seedbox should be covered with foil.

Constant airing and moistening of the soil from a spray bottle is mandatory. It is necessary to ensure that the ground is always moist, otherwise domestic maples will not germinate. Usually, under good conditions, seedlings begin to delight home gardeners after 2 weeks.

After the appearance of a couple of real leaves, abutilone must be transplanted into pots. Cover the transplanted plants with foil. But in the future, the seedlings need to be gradually accustomed to sunlight, opening the film.

grow balsam from seeds

Before sowing balsam seeds, it is best to soak in the essence of potassium permanganate for 10 minutes, then place the seed in a container of warm water for a day. Balsam crops are very demanding on the composition of the soil, which should be light with a pH of 6-7. It is best to use a self-prepared soil mixture.

Sowing container – a container or small pot that is at least 6 cm high. At the bottom of the container, it is necessary to make holes and spread expanded clay in an even layer.

After the crops are moistened with water, we place the container or pot in a transparent bag, filling it with air. A warm location and good, correct light are important requirements for successful plant growth. However, the seedlings should be hidden from direct UV rays. In addition, it is necessary to “give a breath” to the crops and remove the condensate accumulated during the time in the “greenhouse”.

After about 3 weeks, the first shoots usually appear.

Primary requirements:

  • Soil: peat, leafy soil, vermiculite, river coarse sand (2: 1: 1: 1).
  • Illumination: good lighting. Additional light with phytolamp for 2-3 hours.

  • Watering: moisten the soil with a spray bottle. Avoid overdrying and waterlogging of the substrate.
  • Sowing depth: 3-5 mm.

This indoor flower, which can be confused with pine needles from afar, is very popular. Asparagus can be easily grown from seed at home, keeping the indoor temperature relatively cool.

Asparagus seeds are produced by Gavrish and Poisk. The germination rate of these seeds is quite high. Sprouts appear 7-10 days after sowing.

grow asparagus from seeds

The first step is to purchase a bag of asparagus seeds. In containers for seating, you need to pour pre-prepared soil, which should be pre-disinfected.

Spread the seeds gently directly on the soil surface, 3 cm apart, and sprinkle them with a thin layer of earth. You can cover the container with a film or a transparent bag, after sending it to the windowsill.

Crops should be aired daily by opening the containers with crops for 2-5 minutes. Moisten the asparagus as needed and make sure that the top layer of the substrate is always slightly damp.

The sprouts are born together in a couple of weeks. When they get a little stronger, you can accustom them to natural conditions. Once the plants are about 10 cm tall, they can be transplanted into suitable-sized pots.

Primary requirements:

  • Soil: garden soil, peat and sand (2: 1: 1).
  • Illumination: the light should be bright, but diffused.
  • Temperature range: in summer – 22-24C, in winter maximum 18 C.
